Reviewer: Cherie G. Howk, PhD, FNP-BC(Indiana State University)
Description: This book, now in its eighth edition, has been a resource for laboratory and diagnostic tests for the last three decades, providing valuable
comprehensive information about most tests and procedures grouped according to specimen, function, and test type.
Purpose: The stated purpose is to promote the delivery of safe, effective, and informed care for patients undergoing diagnostic tests and procedures by providing this “unique resource.” This is a compelling objective for healthcare, and the authors have provided the tools to achieve it.
Audience: The audience for this book includes clinicians, students, educators, and researchers. The editors are both educators in the areas of nursing, medicine, and physiology.
Features: The manual covers an extensive array of tests and studies for diverse populations. In addition to the usual reference values provided by most books, this one includes extensive clinical implications for increased values and decreased values. It also provides lists for interfering factors and interventions that include pretest and posttest education and care. The Clinical Alert flags are somewhat arbitrary in that not all clinical alerts are related to critical or dangerous values.
Assessment: This is the premier book for students and practitioners on laboratory diagnostic. It is the most complete and provides the most helpful data for use at the bedside.other books and handouts can provide, normal values ,but few provide information that allows for consideration of differential diagnoses. The continual updating of the manual provides confidence that the information is valid.

Modalities for Therapeutic Intervention 5th edition

A volume in the Contemporary Perspectives in Rehabilitation Series; edited by steven L. Wolf, PhD, PT, FAPTA.
Here’s a current, concise, and evidence-based approach to the selection, application, and biophysical effects oftherapeutic modalities in a case-based format with a wealth of photographs and figures.
The 5th Edition builds and expands on the strengths of previous editions and their focus on expanding and strengthening clinical decision-making skills through a hands-on, problem-solving approach.

Reviewer:  christopher James Hughes, PT,PhD,OCS,CSCS(Slippery University)
Description: The authors document the science and procedures underlying the use of modalities in physical therapy in this book. This is an update of the third edition which was published in 1996.
Purpose: The two primary editors have updated the fourth edition to not only significantly restructure the content, but also to provide a much more evidence-based approach to the information. Since the field oftherapeutic modalities can change rapidly due to technological advances and research, the authors have set valid objectives and have succeeded in creating an excellent update.
Audience: Similar to most books on modalities, this one is written for  the classroom . Entry-level physical therapy students are the target audience, but experienced clinicians can use the book as a review of key concepts and the physiological responses of the body to electrotherapeutic and mechanical modalities. The editors and accompanying chapter authors are all well qualified.
Features: The 14 chapters are divided into four major  sections that cover the foundation for the use ofmodalities, technical aspects of therapeutic modalities, clinical applications of modalities for impairments and modality interventions, and medical conditions and emerging applications. The most unique aspect of the work results from the authors’ abilities to integrate a blend of basic science with clinical application while covering each topic. Each author has made excellent use of figures, photos, and diagrams to create a visually pleasing work. The artwork and layout help organize the material. In addition, the authors have used highlight boxes to emphasize key points of the chapters and have ended each section with clinical controversy boxes that allow the reader to reflect on timely clinical topics. For such a broad range of topics, the book is brief, but this does not take away from the authors’ message since the book is concisely written. However, some otherbooks on modalities have accompanying lab manuals which help with adoption of the book for the classroom.
Assessment: This is a great resource fro learning and understanding the role of modalities in patient care. Not only is the coverage of the basis of modalities appropriate, the authors effectively integrate clinical decision-making to make the information much more relevant to the scenarios of clinical practice. Despite the abundance of books on this topic, this one is unique and can serve as a single source or be used as a recommended reference to other texts.

Anatomy and Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function, 5th Edition

Memorable stories must be effective in multiple ways. The story must paint a strong visual picture. The story must weave in tools to make the reader remember important events and understand their impact. Ken Saladin weaves graceful descriptions of human anatomy and physiology processes together with carefully selected clinical applications and fascinating stories from the history of medicine and evolutionary medicine to create a multi-layered story about the human body. A consistent set of chapter learning tools helps students identify and retain key concepts while the stunning visual program provides a realistic view of body structures and processes. The fifth edition is further improved by a complete integration of the text with extensive digital teaching and learning tools.
Saladin’s text requires no prior knowledge of college chemistry or cell biology, and is designed for a two-semester A&P course.
